Dear Supwitchugirl,

Thank you for the relevance.

Eternally,
Mark Morrison

Oregon’s biggest hit since LeGarette Blount just uppercut the world wide web last week. Supwitchugirl, whom we admittedly know nothing about and will freely fabricate backstory where needed, just released a sequel on par with Godfather II, Empire Strikes Back, Aliens and Breakin’ 2: Electric Bugaloo as creations that rival and perhaps surpass the original.

Supwitchugirl, though talented and creative, had not hit the proverbial tipping point until the Oregon trio released “I Love My Ducks” in the fall of ‘09. It went down as, perhaps, the best college football fan anthem ever created. I mean, “Holy moly, is that my boy Masoli? Cookin’ up the offense like he’s cookin’ ravioli” is truly inspired work…taking that to a Spicoli / E.coli rhyme and a 300 average when he goes Rose Bowling was some serious next level shit.

For the record, that was not Masoli cookin’ up the offense, that was Masoli breakin’ and enterin’, which is exactly unlike poppin’ and lockin’ (is that Van Damme?).

Here is the gritty og, aka “I Smell Roses”:

Notice the innovative nighttime and moving camera shots, the cell-phone quality “inside Autzen clips”, the limited and off-duty access to Donald the mascot Duck.

Flash forward, if you will, to late September 2010 and Supwitchugirl’s much ballyhooed and über-hyped follow up effort….”Return of the Quack”. The University knows a good thing when they see it, and by good thing I mean merchandising opportunity. Of the one million or so views of all the versions and remixes of the original, you know a chancellor of this or that watched, brought it to a dean’s attention who viraled it to a president who decided…all access passes to the field, the cheerleaders and the mascot were an order.

Anyhow, you can plainly see two things in this follow up effort…Joey Harrington is really awkward and Supwitchugirl are now some heavy-hitters in Eugene with a bit of Phil Knight-like backing. Oh my video production quality…

The video is such a bittersweet thing for us. On one hand, as serious Boise State fans, we find it really cute and wish our little brother-like Ducks well…and on the other we are super envious and almost inspired enough to get the man band back together. Almost.

Either way, Mark Morrison, you owe Supwitchugirl some love after your youtube relevance must have skyrocketed in recent weeks. I know I found myself watching and rewatching this gem. Is he from UK? If not, is his steering wheel? Enjoy, and think of rollerskating parties past…

Talk about a program that has hit off-season rock bottom, the Oregon Ducks are the new Miami Hurricanes, who were the old Colorado Buffaloes who masqueraded in Husky clothing. Either way, University of Oregon has become the NCAA equivalent of the Cincinnati Bengals, and that’s saying something. Though we’re not entirely sure what.

We’ve heard rumors that U of O will be changing their uniforms (no surprise there) and logo in light of recent events, and it may look a little like this…

Honestly, we’re pretty sure this precipitous slide all started on a fine evening in Boise last September…yeah, the now famous night when the now infamous LeGarrette Blount-Force Trauma had his lunch handed to him during the game, and took out his frustrations afterwards on dude’s jaw.

So today we hear that after an offseason filled with a star quarterback’s fraternity thefts (season-long suspension) and a star running back’s girlfriend choking (a few game suspension…odd in-house sentencing), U of O has dismissed the QB that makes that shitshow go, Jeremiah Masoli, for a “failure to adhere to obligations”. We shudder to think about how stringent those obligations assuredly were. I mean, even LGB got himself reinstated. We can’t decide if Chip Kelly has absolutely no idea how to keep that program afloat, or if Bellotti saw the monster he had created/recruited and ducked out (pun totally intended) while they were only 0-1 against BSU. He did make a curious exit from coaching and an even curiouser exit from his 9 month stint as the AD.

This post really has no point, other than to let you know we still Love Our Ducks and that Bad Moon Over Autzen remains a hot seller in the 541.

I just heard a line of thought at work that goes like this: “I am rooting for Alabama tonight because ESPN says that gives the Broncos the best shot at being ranked number 2.” Where to begin unpacking this wrongheaded thinking? First of all on the merits, would not most voters look at a one-loss Texas and Florida and argue that their one-loss came at the common denominator expense of the National Champions and rank them 2 and 3 in some order ahead of BSU? (Especially if the Alabama-Texas game is competitive.) Let’s say Texas beats Alabama, does that not devalue Florida’s loss and give the Broncos their best shot at number 3 and possibly even number 2 if Alabama gets thumped?

My problem with the line of thought is much bigger: It exposes an implicit buy-in to the legitimacy of the whole system. Who cares if some sportswriters and coaches vote BSU number 2, 3, or 4? What difference does it make? Don’t let some system define your truth. The Broncos are National Champions. Any argument against, however sound, is simple conjecture and assumptions. Fine, let others make those assumptions and swallow the company line. Not me. And nor should BroncoNation. Testify.

Boise State has done it again…torn the country in half. Halvsies may be ambitious, as I think the Doubting Thomases still account for nearly three-quarters of the college football nation. Boise has become more than simply a cute story with an improbable ending, yet public perception, by and large, is that Boise State has no place at the BCS table. And, now, TCU will feel the wrath…they have fallen from the popular people’s choice for a shot at the BCS title to just another overrated mid-major.

As incredible a game and victory last night was for the Bronco Nation, it was disheartening to see syndicated columnists portray the game as nothing more entertaining than a high school football jamboree. Wrote one, “The game didn’t lay an egg; it laid an omelet.” This same writer, assuredly, would have claimed a 10-10 game going into the 4th quarter of the SEC Championship game to be a “defensive slugfest with punches being traded by two stingy giants”, or something similarly big-conference suck-uppy. Yes, suck-uppy. Another columnist, however, had a wonderful line with regard to this and in support of the BSU/TCU matchup…he wrote, loosely, “You know what they call a 10-10 SEC rivalry game heading into the 4th quarter? The 2009 Iron Bowl.” Some people will simply refuse to give a mid-major the respect a deserving mid-major is due…no matter the evidence laid out before them. Ask any coach, in any sport, of any team, at any level of competition and he or she will undoubtedly tell you that going undefeated is no easy task.

That said, I give the you the BSU PR campaign opening the 2009/2010 season: The Decade of Dominance.

It is an impressive list, no matter your conference. And this list includes absolutely none of the 14 wins against 0 losses BSU amassed this season. And a Fiesta Bowl Championship. They now have two BCS bowl wins…as many as Michigan, Penn State and Alabama have combined. BSU became only the second team in history to finsih 14-0. Granted, there will be a third after the BCS title game is concluded. That, however, should take nothing away from BSU’s accomplishments. I mean, they beat as many ranked teams this year as has Texas (2). Basically, this is a long, slow battle to win the hearts and minds of the big conference homers and the dollars of deep-pocketed advertisers . BSU finds itself in the peak of the Gonzaga Curve…and Gonzaga basketball is no longer an anomaly, but a serious program that has staying power.

Pat Forde is generally spot on, but his assertion that “Having the BCS is worse than having shingles” is simply not true. (See article here). We’re not pro-BCS, necessarily, but we’re pretty sure we’d rather watch a psuedo-National Championship game than suffering if not the indignity, than certainly the pain, of shingles.

Additionally, we are not sure there is any indignity associated with shingles. No offense to all you shingles sufferers out there.

Homerism is not unlike optimism in that our cup runneth over here in the 208. There is no doubt that Boise, as a whole, believes TCU could and even should be playing a few days from now against Alabama. Even so, you would also be hard-pressed to find anybody in Boise picking against BSU tonight. It’s just how it goes in a small town. I’m not saying we are hanging our entire emotional, spiritual and financial outlook for 2010 on tonight’s game…just the first 4 months or so of the New Year until Spring Camp opens.

Or, at least, being asked in the 208.
Can BSU really play in the BCS national championship game?
A lot of things would have to happen…a lot of fortuitous thing…not the least of which would be a Boise State win this Saturday vs. UC Davis.
